Surgery

Veterinary Associates offers a range of surgical procedures and anesthetic options. We commonly perform advanced surgical procedures such as knee replacement or complex mass removals. It is not unusual to have a patient who requires a fairly simple surgery but needs a sophisticated anesthetic protocol. In addition to traditional gas anesthesia machines, we have two advanced, computerized ventilators that provide the precise amount of oxygen and anesthetic to our patients, assisting respiration or even completely controlling the respiratory cycle. We routinely use equipment to monitor the heart rhythm and rate (ECG), measure the oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration in the blood (pulse oximetry) , and measure the blood pressure (BP) during surgery and dental procedures. Temperature is also electronically monitored, and our patients are kept warm using a "bear hugger" or thermal warming device. This helps provide a faster and more comfortable recovery.

In addition to standard neuter/spay procedures and mass removals, doctors at Veterinary Associates are qualified to perform advanced surgical procedures including ophthalmic (eye), otic (ear), orthopedic (bones and joints), gastrointestinal (stomach and intestines), urogenital (kidney, bladder, and reproductive organs) and certain cardio/respiratory procedures.

Veterinary Associates is also in the forefront of pain management, providing a level of pain control for our patients that rivals or exceeds our human counterparts.

Dr. Labdon, who oversees our surgical department, has more than 30 years of surgical experience and training. Our veterinarians are assisted by certified veterinary technicians who have decades of experience and receive continuing education on a regular basis. Working alongside the surgeons, these technicians keep a very close watch on the patient and monitoring equipment.

In addition to the services provided on site, we work closely with several referral institutions for specific treatments, such as MRI and CAT scans, radiation therapy, or spinal and cataract surgery. We have developed strong relationships with the doctors in these facilities to ensure that our patients and clients receive the same level of care found at Veterinary Associates.
